Three years extension in service of chief of army staff

Islamabad, August 20, 2019 (PPI-OT): Syed Amjad Shah, Vice-Chairman, Pakistan Bar Council has issued the following Statement regarding extension in service of Chief of Army Staff by the Government of Pakistan:- “Yesterday’s decision of the Federal Government to grant three years extension in service of the incumbent Chief of Army Staff is not a welcome step. The party in power has always claimed that it believes in strengthening of Institutions for Good Governance that being vital for progress and stability of the Country, but its decision of granting extension in service of the Chief of Army Staff is not only the negation of its oft repeated claim but also against the national interest and amount to weakening the very important Institution of Armed Forces.

There are not two opinions that only the strong Institutions and not the Individuals, can play the vital and important role for the merit oriented Good Governance and progress of the Country and as such it is in the great national interest that the Government and all others concerned should make endeavours and pursuits for achieving that objective.

It is, therefore, imperative and in the national interest as well as for ensuring Good Governance and strengthening the Institutions including the Institution of Defence Forces, that the Government should withdraw its decision of granting extension to the incumbent Chief of the Army Staff and instead should appoint a new Chief of the Army Staff on the principle of seniority and competence, of course, after the incumbent Army Chief retires upon successful completion of his normal service tenure.”
