Repression in IOJK intensified under coronavirus pandemic: Masood Khan

Islamabad, April 23, 2020 (PPI-OT): Sardar Masood Khan, President Azad Jammu and Kashmir, complimented the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for its nationwide efforts and effectively working with all stakeholders in the control and containment of the coronavirus in Pakistan, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The AJK President made these remarks during a visit to the NDMA headquarters here in Islamabad, where he was received by Chairman NDMA Lt. General Muhammad Afzal. The President was also given a comprehensive briefing on the current situation of coronavirus breakout in Pakistan and the efforts of the NDMA in this regard.

Chairman NDMA during the presentation extended full support to the AJK government and its people and assured that additional testing labs, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and safety masks will be provided to the doctors, nurses and paramedical staff working in hospitals all over AJK. He said that soon it is hoped that the capacity of daily testing will be increased all over the country.

Speaking highly of the professionalism and dedication displayed by NDMA, the President praised the dynamic leadership of the Chairman NDMA and the sterling performance of his team under these very challenging circumstances.

President AJK on the occasion said that while the world faces the Covid-19 pandemic, we cannot in any way forget our brothers and sisters in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Indian forces, he said have intensified their repression in IOJK under the cover of the coronavirus pandemic. India is killing young Kashmiris, brutalizing the population and not releasing the thousands of Kashmiri prisoners who are being mercilessly tortured. These cramped prisons, he said, are high-risk areas for the spread of coronavirus.

Masood Khan said that in addition to the oppression faced by the people of IOJK, no adequate treatment is being provided to coronavirus victims in the occupied territory and the figures about the actual number of patients are being suppressed by the Indian government.

The AJK President said that there is a stark contrast between AJK, where there have been no deaths from Covid-19, and IOJK, where the coronavirus patients are being provided unsatisfactory care and treatment. The situation in IOJK, he said, is illustrated by these figures: there is 1 ventilator for 71,000 people, 1 doctor for 3900 people and 1 armed soldier or every 9 people. This shows the priority of the Indian government, he said.
