Parliamentarians of the Asian region will put their heads together in Islamabad

Islamabad, November 23, 2016 (PPI-OT):Parliamentarians of the Asian region will put their heads together in Islamabad to work out a joint mechanism to enable the nascent democracies face challenges and explore new avenues for establishing better linkages among the Asian Parliaments. During the two day seminar, commencing on Thursday, November 24, 2016, they will brainstorm the problems being faced by democracies of South Asians and South East Asians democracies.

The Senate is hosting this first ever regional hot topic seminar on, “Democracies in transition, and the challenges they face” in collaboration with Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). The extraordinary event is taking place as result of CPA’s new strategic plan which calls for strengthening the Association at branch, regional and international levels through different communications. Pakistan in its capacity as a member of the Asian region volunteered to host this seminar as part of the new and evolved strategy.

The two day seminar apart from having the Secretary General of the CPA Akbar Khan and representatives of Parliaments of the South Asian and South East Asian regions, will have top tier representation of both Houses of the Parliament of Pakistan, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Chairman Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani, as well as the Speakers of the provincial Assemblies of Pakistan. Considering the fact that democratic societies are based on an outward approach i.e. where all pillars of state work well in coordination with different segments and spheres of society, Senate of Pakistan has tried its best to ensure representation of people from all walks of life.

The Senate of Pakistan as a member of CPA community has ensured that this hot topic seminar fulfils efficiently the objectives of the Association to promote Constitutional, legislative, economic, cultural and social aspects of parliamentary democracies. Three panel discussions would be arranged in a manner that the theme of the discussion and the panellists as well as participants correlates with each other.

The three discussions will be held on the second day of the seminar i.e. 25th November, under the titles of role of civil society in democratic transition, democracy in diversity and transparency standards in democracy. The importance of Pakistan couldn’t be over emphasized as tall panel discussions will be chaired by speakers of the provincial assemblies. Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani in his message for the event has expressed the hope that with regular interactions like these and by playing an even more constructive part in the Association.

Pakistan can benefit more to address the problems of freedom, national integration, and implementation of policies, federation and power of the central government in its democracy and to establish itself firmly as a true democracy in the community of the parliamentary democracies in CPA and around the globe. A challenge is not just any problem. “A challenge is a difficulty that carries within it an opportunity for progress. By overcoming challenges, democracies can go to even higher bars of success and social prosperity. We are all more or less, democracies in transition,” he maintained.
