Massive awareness campaign to be launched on TB: Dr. Azra Pechuho

Karachi, January 07, 2019 (PPI-OT): Sindh Minister for Health and Population Welfare Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho has said that there is a need to include material in syllabus regarding awareness on diseases like Tubercclosis, Hepatitis, Dengue, Negleria, malaria and so on so that we may save precious lives. This she said while presiding over a meeting with various departments on Multi Sectoral Collaboration and Accountability Framework to End TB in Sindh. Secretary Population Welfare Zahid Ali Abbasi, Special Secretary Health Nasim ul Ghani Sehto, Secretary WDD Alia Shahid, Director General Health Sindh Dr. Mobin Ahmed, Dr. Abdul Rauf, Director TB Control Sindh and representatives of STOPTB and public sector also attended the meeting.

The meeting was briefed that Sindh province had TB disease burden of 0.12 million cases per year while the treatment coverage was 60%. The participants also stressed upon for process of adopting the framework in the country and province to involve officials across government sectors, NGOs, members of Civil Society and tuberculosis-affected communities.

On this occasion Provincial Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho suggested to include TB Control Program in regular Budget for eradication of this deadly disease and asked the quarters concerned to have regular meetings with Divisional Commissioners and DCs to overcome this disease and Population Department Sindh should conduct screening test for TB. It was also decided that a mass awareness campaign on TB was the need of the hour because TB was a curable and treatable disease.

It was also suggested that on World TB Day a massive awareness campaign would be launched while educational institutions would also be visited and all tools of the media would also be used for the purpose. Dr. Azra Pechuho asked to implement Action Plan for eradication of TB and to establish a technical working group to develop/ use of a multi-sectoral accountability/ Responsibility Framework.
