Islamabad, December 10, 2015 (PPI-OT): Minister of State and Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Ms. Marvi Memon is representing Pakistan at the global conference on violence against women organized by UN Women at Istanbul from 9-10 December, says a press release received from Ankara, Turkey here today.
Ms. Marvi Memon today addressed the conference participants. She apprised the audience about initiatives taken by the Government of Pakistan under the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. She said Pakistan has endorsed UN plans for betterment of woman and in pursuit of this objective, several laws were enacted to improve the position of women including Acid Crime Legislation, Workplace Harassment Bill and upcoming legislation on rape laws.
In order to end violence against women, the Minister proposed to create Woman Super Heroes at global and state levels whereby woman from all walks of life be made role models for the impoverished and marginalised. In this context, she referred to her projects like BISP’s Sisters in Success, as an example.
She also highlighted government’s resolve to uplift women politically by giving them smart cards and voting rights all over Pakistan. She informed that 5.2 million women have been empowered through this initiative. The event was inaugurated by the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu being attended by over 300 delegates from around the world.
