Islamabad, June 19, 2014 (PPI-OT): The first ever Prime Minister’s Provision of Laptop Scheme will be formally launched tomorrow by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Mohammad Nawaz Sharif under the patronage of Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, at Islamabad.
This was revealed in a high-level review meeting to firm up the arrangements for the maiden national level launch of the scheme presided over by Mohtarma Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Chairperson, Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, here today.
While reviewing the arrangements, the Chairperson informed the high-level meeting that as per promise with the youth of the country, the Primer Mohammad Nawaz Sharif would distribute the laptops among the students hailing from all the provinces including FATA, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan with an objective to boost the scope of research, quality education and improved access to information and communication technology among the graduate and post-graduate level students in the country.
The Chairperson further apprised the participants that the 4.0 billion rupees’ Prime Minister’s Provision of Laptop Scheme would cover 100,000 students across the federation and added that high quality laptops “Assembled in Pakistan” by Haier Electrical Appliances Corporation, China would be distributed among the students.
She maintained that the present democratic government had been effectively tracking and fulfilling the promises it made to the people of Pakistan before assuming the power in May last year and added that another commitment has been honored by the Prime Minister by launching the laptop scheme for students.
Briefing the meeting on the inbuilt facilities of the laptops, Chairman Higher Educational Commission, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad explained that PTCL EVO 3G dongle would also be provided for free internet access for three months and further explained that an inbuilt App in the laptops would provide various academic productivity tools to the students including a Digital Library to access more than 6,000 research journals offered under National Digital Library Program and also provide access to more than 50,000 e-Books through e-library program of HEC and in addition, the students would have access to more than 6,000 digitized theses of Pakistani PhD researchers. Access to Anti-plagiarism software acquired by HEC and provided to all universities/ institutes will also be included in the laptop.
The laptops will have a unique feature of access to Massive Online Open Courseware (MOOCs), like lectures of Harvard, MIT, Stanford universities and other open courseware like Microsoft Dreamspark including access to more than 170+ licensed software for free download from Microsoft portal, Microsoft Office 365 which offers online use of Microsoft Office, email account, SharePoint, and unified communication.
In addition, the students would also have the access to various national job portals alongwith the list of HEC recognized universities/ institutes and their brief profile and online complaint registration and redressal system for students to lodge complaints relating to services provided by PMYP, HEC and their respective university/ institutes.
