Kashmiri diaspora stage demo outside UN office in Geneva

Srinagar, June 28, 2018 (PPI-OT): The Kashmiri diaspora in Europe held a demonstration outside UN headquarters in Geneva, today, to condemn the ongoing Indian statement terrorism in occupied Kashmir. The demonstrators holding placards and banners raised high-pitch slogans favouring freedom of Kashmir.

A good number of Kashmiris from across Europe also descended on the office of the United Nations in Geneva to thank the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for its historic report on Kashmir. They strongly condemned the Indian intransigence and asked UNHRC to act upon the recommendations to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the rights violations in Kashmir.

Those who attended the demonstration included Kashmiri Altaf Hussain Wani, Johan Howarth, Chaudhary Parveez Ashraf, Sardar Amjad Yousaf, Syed Faiz Naqashbandi, Hassan al Bana, Advocate Parvez Shah and Shamim Shawl.

Meanwhile, a Kashmiri delegation held detailed meeting with OIC’s permanent representative to Geneva Dr. Rashid Bin Hamed Al-balushi and briefed him on prevailing rights situation in occupied Kashmir. The delegation apprised the OIC representative about the ongoing systematic and massive human rights abuses perpetrated by the Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.

On the other hand, the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein in an article reacted to allegations made by the Indian government over the report and said accountability for human rights abuses and violations cannot be indefinitely suspended while waiting for a political solution to Kashmir.

Hussein said the “culture of impunity for human rights violations” under laws such as the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act of 1990 (AFSPA) and the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act of 1978 was “deeply concerning”.
