IOK authorities ban Gilani Forum’s seminar, arrest Sehrai

Srinagar, October 07, 2015 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities, today, banned a seminar of the forum led by Syed Ali Gilani and Indian police arrested Tehreek-e-Hurriyet General Secretary, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, on the airport road in Srinagar. The seminar titled “How to take the ongoing freedom movement to its logical conclusion” was to be held by the forum’s leaders including Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Syed Bashir Andrabi, Hakeem Abdur Rasheed and Bilal Siddiqui at a local hotel in Srinagar. However, the hotel management refused to provide space for it.

“Police did not allow the hotel management to provide space for the function,” forum Spokesman, Ayaz Akbar, said in a statement in Srinagar. He added that later the seminar was shifted to Hyderpora office of the forum but the police did not allow any participants to reach the venue.

“Police arrested Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai on the way to Hyderpora and all those who were in the office,” Akbar said. The spokesman strongly condemned the banning of seminar. Hurriyet leaders, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Hakeem Abdul Rasheed, Syed Bashir Andrabi and Altaf Ahmad Shah were detained in the office of the forum at Hyderpora.

They strongly condemning the authorities for the action at the behest of their masters in Delhi said that conferences and seminars throughout the world were considered as a civilized process, but this was not the case I in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) strongly condemned the restrictions on the seminar. The DFP spokesperson in a statement said that the ban on seminar had proved that the administration’s claims of the freedom of speech and expression and battle of ideas had proven hollow.
