Srinagar, February 13, 2016 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference (G), Syed Ali Gilani, has strongly condemned the registration of a case against the Kashmiri intellectual and former lecturer of Delhi University, Professor Syed Abdur Rehman Gilani, and arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union President, Kanihiya Kumar, under sedition charges. Indian authorities have booked Professor SAR Gilani and Kanhaiya Kumar in the cases registered in connection with two separate events held in New Delhi to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Kashmiri martyr, Muhammad Afzal Guru, on February 9.
Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar said that Indian government’s action was contrary to the democratic claims of India and against the freedom of expression and it had no constitutional and legal justification.
He said that the students of JNU held a peaceful protest demonstration to express their solidarity with the oppressed Kashmiris and it was not any crime. “Many prominent leaders of India and human rights activists had raised questions over the secret hanging of Muhammad Afzal Guru and had termed it as a judicial murder. In this perspective, if the students in JNU also express their concern, then how can it be termed as a crime,” he said.
The APHC (G) Chairman said that the detention of JNU Students Union President and slapping of sedition charges against him was a grave injustice with him and this injustice could not be tolerated in any way. Syed Ali Gilani said that this action would have serious consequences and its responsibility would be on the Indian government. He demanded immediate release of Kanhaiya Kumar. Hurriyet leaders, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Hakeem Abdul Rasheed and Muhammad Saleem Zargar in a joint statement also castigated the Indian rulers for booking SAR Gilani under sedition.
