Lahore, September 06, 2016 (PPI-OT):Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif presided over a meeting which was participated by a high level delegation of World Bank led by Country Director Patchamuthu Illangovan. The meeting reviewed progress of programmes continuing with the cooperation of World Bank in education, health and other sectors in the province. Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said that World Bank is an important partner of Punjab government with regard to improvement of social sectors and with its cooperation; several programmes are running successfully for providing best facilities to the people of the province.
He said that the role of World Bank is commendable for improvement of social sectors. He said that Punjab government has taken comprehensive measures for the improvement of education, health, potable drinking water and skill development sectors. He said that revolutionary reforms are being introduced in education and health sectors. The Chief Minister said that amount of scholarship has been increased to one thousand rupees per month for girl students of class six to ten in 16 districts of the province and districts of south Punjab have been given priority in this programme.
Shahbaz Sharif said that nutrition programme is of vital importance to eliminate malnutrition among the children and added that the cooperation of World Bank is welcomed in this regard. The Chief Minister directed to consider further expansion of the scope of nutrition programme. He said that there is a need to work on multi dimensions to eliminate malnutrition among the children. He said that children are our future and all out resources are available to safeguard it.
He directed Chairman P and D that a comprehensive plan should be evolved for expanding nutrition programme and collaboration with regard to World Bank. Shahbaz Sharif said that Punjab government is implementing a coordinated programme of preparing quality skilled manpower. He said that under Skill Development Programme, thousands of youth have been made skillful so far and lakhs of youth of the province will be empowered by imparting vocational training by 2018.
Assistance by World Bank in skill development sector will be welcomed, he added. The Chief Minister said that Punjab government is spending billions of rupees for poverty alleviation and improvement of social sectors. Country Director World Bank Patchamuthu Illangovan while speaking on the occasion said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif is a visionary leader and he has made unprecedented measures for the progress of the province and improving the living standard of the people.
He said that investment of billions of rupees in the programme of provision of clean drinking water by Punjab government augers well. Setting up of Punjab Social Protection Authority is an excellent step of Punjab government, he added. He said that Punjab government is moving forward in right direction with regard to education, health, preparation of skilled work force and social sector development.
Programme Leader World bank. Dr. Inam ul Haq gave a briefing regarding important features of nutrition programme in connection with removing malnutrition among children. Provincial Ministers Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Begum Zakia Shahnawaz, Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Mian Yawar Zaman, Ch. Muhammad Shafiq, Advisors Kh. Salman Rafique, Dr. Ijaz Nabi, Chief Secretary, Chairman Bank of Punjab, Chairman Planning and Development, secretaries and senior officers of concerned departments were present on the occasion.
