Concern expressed over HR violations in occupied Kashmir

Srinagar, December 11, 2015 (PPI-OT): Human Rights defenders gathered at a human rights conference in Chandigarh adopted a resolution on Kashmir besides other issues. The resolution expressed concern over human rights violations in occupied Kashmir. The forum patronised by the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement issued in Srinagar said that the conference in which the resolution was adopted was organized by Sikh organisations.

“In Kashmir, human rights violations continue routinely. In the name of security, the Kashmiri leadership continues to be illegally detained. To wave off opprobrium from any quarter, all house arrests and detentions are illegal – with no trace or record,” the statement quoted the speakers as having said.

The resolution said that a common feature of violations in occupied Kashmir and some parts of India was the flagrant misuse of laws ranging from the Armed Forces Special Powers Act to the Public Safety Act, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, regular temporary detention procedures and sedition provisions of Indian Penal Code.

The statement said that the conference was organised by Sikhs for Human Rights, Lawyers for Human Rights, Punjab Human Rights Organisation and the Sikh Youth of Punjab in connection with the World Human Rights Day, which is observed on December 10.

The resolution said that the PDP-led regime in occupied Kashmir was only on paper and the territory was being governed by India. It said that the politics of intolerance had been pushed to the limits and from imprisoning, harassing and killings of Kashmiris in fake encounters, the authorities wanted to decide what food people would eat. “This dictatorial attitude and negative governance is unacceptable. International human rights groups and the UN must also wake up from their slumber and reopen the case of rights abuses of the people of Kashmir,” it added.

The participants of the conference included the forum spokesman, Ayaz Akbar, Justice (retd) M Katju, justice A S Bains, noted Kashmiri columnist, Abdul Majeed Zargar, Harpal Singh Cheema, Kanwarpal Singh, Advocate Navkiran Singh, Advocate Amar Singh Chahal and Dal Khalsa head, H S Dhami.
