JRL condemns torturing of Kashmiri inmates in Tihar Jail

Srinagar, November 28, 2017 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik has expressed serious concern over the torturing of several Kashmiri prisoners by the authorities of New Delhi’s infamous Tihar Jail.

Eighteen people, most of them Kashmiris including Shahid Yousuf, son of prominent freedom leader Syed Salahuddin, were injured after they were assaulted by the staff of Tihar Jail on the night of 21st November.

Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued in Srinagar said, physical torture of Kashmiri inmates including Shahid Yousuf in Tihar Jail is a clear violation of fundamental, human and legal rights of prisoners who have been subjected to severe beating by the jail authorities. They said that by keeping the Kashmiri political prisoners in jails of Jammu and India, the Indian authorities were violating the ruling of their own Supreme Court under which a prisoner had to be kept in a jail near to his home.

They demanded shifting of Kashmiri detainees to the Kashmir Valley as they faced threat to their lives from the criminals lodged in these jails and communal authorities of the prisons. They appealed to the UN Human Rights Council, Amnesty International, Asia Watch and other world human rights bodies to take strong note of the assault on the Kashmiri inmates.

The Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party and Hurriyat leaders, Zafar Akbar Butt and Bilal Siddiqui, in their statements strongly denounced the assault on the prisoners including Shahid Yousuf. They warned that the puppet rulers of occupied Kashmir would have to face consequences if anything untoward happened to any of the Kashmiri prisoners.

On the other hand, the residents of Soibugh area of Budgam district staged forceful protests against the murderous attack on Shahid Yousuf in Tihar Jail. They said that his life was in danger in Tihar Jail and demanded of the Indian authorities to shift him to Srinagar Central Jail.

The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Muhammad Yasin Malik, in a statement in Srinagar deplored that the puppet authorities had imposed a blanket ban on peaceful political activities of the resistance leaders. He said that arresting him and placing Syed Ali Gilani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest had become a common practice for the so-called rulers and their Indian masters who had no courage to fight the resistance leaders on political turf. Meanwhile, a soldier of Indian Border Security Force shot dead his colleague in a camp at Mader in Bandipora district after some altercation, late last night.
