Karachi, November 03, 2017 (PPI-OT):A five-day international workshop discussing a peculiar type of urological disorder concluded at SIUT Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) here today. During the workshop medical professionals were imparted the new surgical techniques of treating urinary incontinence found both in females and males. The participants were also exposed to surgery of patients suffering from fistula which occurs due to obstructed labour after gynecological surgical procedures.
Leading surgeon, who conducted the workshop from UK and Nigeria appreciated SIUT’s efforts for arranging such kind of workshop to impart surgical skills to young graduates with an aim to bring benefit and relief to the patients. They also lauded the initiative taken by SIUT of holding such workshops as it provides an ideal platform to young medical professionals to equip themselves with modern technology of surgical sciences practiced in other parts of the world.
The experts stressed the need for preventive measures to save female population from fistula for which they suggested improvement in the infrastructure of health services, collaboration between urologists and gynecologists and training of postgraduates to detect, diagnose and treat patients at the earliest to prevent such complications. According to experts once the fistula occurs the suffering female is socially and culturally isolated and neglected by family and society.
At the closing ceremony the participants thanked SIUT for taking up an issue which was not only a medical issue but also carries social implications. Appreciating the SIUT initiative of arranging a workshop on such a major subject they said “such workshops provide an ideal platform not only to acquire modern surgical techniques but also to share the experiences with experts from abroad.”
The workshop was the third in its series which were held during past three years in which over nine hundred medical graduates and postgraduates received training. The experts who conducted the workshop represented faculty members from renowned prestigious institutions like Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital London UK, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham UK, University College Hospital Ibandan Nigeria and SIUT.
