One-day conference on Gravitation held at Punjab University

Lahore: Punjab University Department of Mathematics organized one-day conference on “Gravitation” in honour of Prof Dr Asghar Qadir here in the Al-Razi Hall of Centre for Undergraduate Studies on Saturday.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest while Prof Dr Asghar Qadir, Dr Riaz-ud-Din, Chairman Mathematics Department Prof Dr Shahid Saeed Siddiqui, Dr Muhammad Sharif, faculty members and a large number of students were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran said Dr Asghar Qadir and Dr Riaz-ud-Din had greatly contributed to the field of mathematics and trained young people to do research and they will also produce PhDs in future who will light more candles. He paid complements to Dr Shahid Saeed Siddiqui and said he had transformed the culture of mathematics and had promoted research culture in the mathematics department.

He said Punjab University had the potential of becoming number 1 University not only of Pakistan but also in the world. Dr Mujahid Kamran said that in 2008, 29 percent of regular faculty members were PhD and now after three-and-a-half-year, the figure had reached 40 percent. He said further that during 1990-2008, the varsity was producing 40 PhDs annually and now PU had been producing over 100 PhDs annually.

He said that in 2007, there were 162 research publications while in 2010, the number had increased to more than double to 352 while till 31st of July this year, 320 research publications had been published in impact factor journals. He said that in 2007, 29 books were published by faculty members, while in 2010, 80 books have been published by faculty members.

He said to maintain this momentum, there was dire need to continue the policies of the present administration. He said if you take step in right direction with commitment then the results could be more prospective in future.

The Vice-Chancellor said the original language of physics was mathematics and all the formulas were of mathematics. He said mathematics and physics were the subjects without which no progress in technological filed was possible. Prof Dr Shahid Saeed Siddiqui and Dr Muhammad Sharif also spoke on the occasion.

In the end, Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, Prof Dr Asghar Qadir, Prof Dr Shahid Saeed Siddiqui and Dr Muhammad Sharif cut a cake to celebrate 65th birthday of Dr Asghar Qadir.
